General description

Engineering materials: metals, polymers, ceramics and composites.
Structure and properties of materials.

General aim

The aim of the course is to provide knowledge about main engineering materials in modern technology: metallic materials, non-metallic materials. Ferrous metals and alloys: steels and cast irons. Non-ferrous metals and alloys: aluminum, copper, titanium, nickel and magnesium and their alloys. Non-metallic materials: plastics, engineering ceramics and composite materials.

Aim

The student who has mastered this course:
- classifies engineering materials and gives examples of every group.
- names different properties of materials and defines them.
- describes the structure of materials and knows the connection between the structure and properties of materials.
- names non-metallic engineering materials, knows their properties and application.

Form description

Lectures, homework, groupwork, tests, exam.

Homework: written paper and presentation on the topic given by the lecturer.

Engineering materials course is ending with a written exam.

100...91 points- grade 5 (excellent)
90...81 points- grade 4 (very good)
80...71 points- grade 3 (good)
70...61 points- grade 2 (sufficient)
60...51 points- grade 1 (insufficient)

The course Engineering Materials is a mandatory course and the final grade must be at least 2 (sufficient).
