General description

In the building act it is said, that actions and influences on a building may not cause neither a collapse nor too big deformations and cannot pose a threat to a persons’ life, health, property or environment. The aim of this course is to tie the knowledge gained in theoretical mechanics with the size and material of the element. Since a building may not collapse or deform too much, then the main question to be answered is – what dimensions and material should the element be, to assure safety.

General aim

Introduce the principles of structural analysis and necessary calculations. The first topic is how to find stresses in different work conditions and how to check the ultimate limit state (ULS) condition. Structural stability and it’s effects on ULS is also studied. The last topic is the check of serviceability limit state (SLS) – in other words how to ensure deformations are not too big.

Aim

In the end of the course the student:
1) is able to find the cross-sectional area’s characteristics
2) is able to find stresses in different work conditions
3) knows how to apply the ultimate limit state condition and solve corresponding exercises
4) understands how and what kind of deformatations take place in different work conditions and how to ensure, that they are not too big (SLS)
5) knows how stability affects the carrying capacity and how to take it into account
6) Can analyse and evaluate if the result is realistic

Form description
