General description

An overview is given of the approach to materials in modern engineering science and evaluation of the state of materials at loading. The terms external and internal force, mechanical tension, deformation and displacement are explained. Mainly examples of bars are examined. The main relationships between strength and rigidity in calculations of bars are derived in the cases of simple and combined loading.

General aim

Strength of materials is the main prerequisite subject for a civil engineer in order to pass the programme of construction structures. In an applied higher educational establishment the theoretical part of the strength of materials is learned only to the extent necessary for substantial understanding of the calculation of structures.

Aim

The student who has passed the course of strength of materials is able to understand the calculation rules in standard documents of construction structures design. He/she knows how to use manuals, find necessary information from them and is able to use it.

Form description

Classroom work is divided into lectures and practical lessons. As laboratory work steel tensile and bending tests are performed. Homeworks are done for all topics as independent studying. There are two tests during the semester and the course assessment is a written exam.
