General descriptionDeformation of bodies while applying external forces. Stress. Strength of elastic and fragile material. True stresses. Limiting stresses. Permissible stresses. Unit strain. HookeŽs law. Modulus of elasticity (YoungŽs modulus). Diagram of longitudinal force and stress. Compression and throttling. Shear. Twist. Bending. Distribution of normal stresses in bending. Different strength calculations. Determination of weakest section in bending. Moment of inertia. Tension with twist. Tension with bending. Twist with bending. BarŽs stability (buckling). Alternating stress cycles. Fatigue of materials. PoissonŽs ratio. Contact strength and contact stress.
General aimThe objective of the course is to provide knowledge about strength, stiffness, stability and fatigue of simpler construction and machine elements.
AimThe student who has completed the course knows the general bases of strength and stiffness calculations, and practical directions for designing simpler typical structures and for checking the durability of existing structures.
Form descriptionLectures and practical classes (calculations of structural elements).
