General descriptionClassification, structure and properties of soils. Soils in Estonia. Stresses in soils. Ground water. Bearing capacity of soils. Shallow foundation and piled foundation. Stability of slopes. Retaining walls and sheetings. Soil improvement.
General aimThe objective of the course is to give an overview about soil properties and foundation types being used, also about cooperation of foundations and soils, stability of slopes, behaviour of retaining walls and sheetings and improvement methods of soils.
AimStudent after completing the course:
1. has an overview of widespread soils, knows their properties and can interpret the engineering geology report of the construction site; 2. can calculate stresses in soil and take into account the influence of ground water; 3. knows the basis of calculation of shallow foundations, piled foundations and retaining walls; can make appropriate decisions according to spesific conditions; 4. can solve water sinking problems; 5. has an overview of design codes and other literature.
