Subject 'Soil Mechanics and Foundations + Course Project'Name in Estonian: Pinnasemehaanika ja vundamendid + projekt
General descriptionLimit state design. Properties of soils. Stress distribution from the soil dead weight and the weight, imposed by a building. Corner point method. Bearing capacity of soil and the factors that have an impact on it. Ground water. Dimensioning of a shallow foundation and pier foundation. Cooperation of a building and footing. Calculation of settlements. Permitted limit deformations. Piled foundations. Advantages and disadvantages of the types of piles. Bearing capacity of a pile. Slope persistence. Active and passive pressure, affecting the retaining wall. Possible layouts of a retaining wall and their control. Soil improvement, compaction. Use of geosynthetics.
General aimThe objective of the course is to give an overview about soil properties and foundation types being used, as well as the design basics of differnt types of foundations.
AimStudent after completing the course
- has an overview of widespread soils, knows their properties and can interpret the engineering geology report of the construction site - has an overview of design codes and other literature - can determine loads for foundations and retaining walls - can calculate the dimessions, bearing capacity and settlements of shallow foundations; can approximately determine the bearing capacity of pile. - knows the basic constructuve solutions of shallow and pile foundations and can choose the optimal solution according to the spesific problem Form descriptionClassroom work: lectures and practical classes.
Independent work: in accordance with the initial data, given by the lecturer, the student performs the calculation of a shallow foundation. Literature1. EVS-EN 1997-1:2005+NA:2006 Geotehniline projekteerimine. Osa 1: Üldeeskirjad.
