Aim

The objective of the applied higher education curricula in civil engineering is to prepare engineers (EstQF level 6, Civil Engineer in Buildings and Structures), who are accepted by the labour market and who fulfil tasks that need analytical thinking and decisiveness in changing circumstances, have field-specific knowledge and skills, organize the division of resources and the work of employees and takes responsibility for it.
The acquiring of field-specific knowledge and skills takes place within the theoretical and practical courses and practical training in the workplace, as given in the curriculum. In addition, the curriculums objective is to develop the general educational knowledge and social maturity; provide knowledge in foreign languages so, that it allows the person to work and develop in his/her specialty; give basic knowledge in mathematics and sciences, overall technical sciences and graphics.
The student, who has passed the civil engineering curriculum, can work as a construction manager and continue studies in the master’s level.

Learning outcomes

The student
- has broad knowledge of the field of construction:
- is able to apply the acquired knowledge and skills in practice;
- is able to estimate the profession's role and outcomes in the society from an ethical point of view;
- is prepared to function actively and responsibly in the civil society and is able to work in multidisciplinary project teams;
- is guided by the engineer's professional ethics and code of behaviour in one's activities ;
- has the communication and leadership skills necessary for the specialty, uses accurate specialty terminology;
- handles information and communication technologies necessary for the work;
- knows and uses the necessary legislation, regulations and technical standards applicable in the field of construction;
- is able to develop oneself continuously in the specialty and work;
- is able to consider social, economic, environmentally friendly and ethical aspects when putting designed projects into effect;
- knows building materials and their properties in technological processes;
- knows the main technologies of construction processes, requirements for accepting construction works, and is able to evaluate the quality of works;
- is able to design buildings at intermediate level of difficulty and manage the design processes;
- knows the operating principles of construction machinery, their fields of application and is able to determine their productivity;
- knows the principles of the administration and maintenance of buildings;
- is able to provide valuations of construction costs;
- knows the bases of entrepreneurship;
- follows and assures the following of health and safety regulations;
- has the analytical skills characteristic of an engineer.
