General description

Methods of cold stamping and their characterization. Trimming dies, precision dies, bending dies and tensile dies - their design and calculation. Computation of forces and measurements. Typical constructions, units and parts. Manufacturing accuracy of stamp components. Materials for making stamp parts. Manufacturability of stamps design. Hard metal stamps, the specific features of their design.
Extrusion methods of plastics. Classification and characterization of die sets.Construction of different types of die sets (including moulds).
Checking of knowledge: exercises, tests and pass/fail examination.

General aim

The goal of the course is to provide knowledge of
1. cold working methods, cold stamps of sheet metals and die sets of plastic
2. typical constructions and materials of stamps, basic principles of design and technological computation
3. methods of extrusion of plastics, design of different types of die sets

Aim

After completing the course a student
1. has a general overview of cold stamping methods of sheet metals, and a detailed overview of trimming, bending and tensile dies
2. is able to determine the required forces for stamping, to make technological and construction designs of stamps and dies
3. is familiar with die sets for processing of plastics using extrusion and injection moulding methods

Form description

1. 32 hours of lectures according to the syllabus topics.
2. 8 hours of practical session: calculation of forces and measurements of different stamps.
3. Independent work of 38 hours. Solving individual tasks of determining the required forces, measurements and compression centres in the stamping process. Assessment of completed tasks.

4. Classroom tests.
