Subject 'Engineering Materials'Name in Estonian: Tehnomaterjalid
General descriptionIntroduction to engineering materials: metals, plastics, composites and ceramics. Atomic and crystal structure of metals, crystal lattices. Properties of materials: physical, mechanical, technological properties.
Structure of metals and metal alloys. Crystallization, the structure of metal alloys. Binary phase diagrams. Iron-carbon alloys: steels and cast irons. Basics of heat treatment of steels. Non-ferrous metals and their alloys: Al, Cu, Ni, Ti and Mg. Non-metallic engineering materials: plastics, ceramics and composites. Classification, properties and usage. General aimThe aim of the course is to provide knowledge about main engineering materials in modern technology: metallic materials, non-metallic materials. Ferrous metals and alloys: steels and cast irons. Non-ferrous metals and alloys: aluminum, copper, titanium, nickel and magnesium and their alloys. Non-metallic materials: plastics, engineering ceramics and composite materials.
AimThe student who has mastered this course:
- classifies engineering materials and gives examples of every group. - names physical, mechanical and technological properties of materials and defines them. - describes the structure of materials and knows the connection between the structure and properties of materials. - describes heat treatment processes of ferrous and non-ferrous metals and knows the impact of heat treatment on materials' properties. - names non-metallic engineering materials, knows their properties and application Form descriptionLectures, homework, groupwork, tests, exam.
