General description

Modes of transport; transportation market. Capital and current assets in transportation. Determination the need of vehicles. The analysis of fleet exploitation. Calculation and the analysis of recourses of transport company. The structure and classification of transport cost. The net-cost calculation. Financial indicators of a transport company. An investment analysis on the basis of transportation company. Market regulation in transport. Transport systems in theory. Practical assignments; tasks, case studies.

General aim

The aim of the course to is to develop and verify economic knowledge on the basis of logistics and transportation mainly. The course teaches to associate economic fundamental notions and economic terminology with transport sector. The main objective is to master the skills of planning, calculating and analyzing, based on principles that are currently active in practice of transportation economics.

Aim

Student:
1. Commands specific terminology and associates it correctly with technology and economics as well as understands main terminology and concepts of transport economics.
2. Manages to refer different modes of transportation and determine their best usage.
3. Orientates in contemporary price policy and consequently is able to commit planning and calculation of transport service as well as analyze production cost/ net-cost and determine material cost.
4. Manages in labor need figures, is able to plan wages fund and use different wages setups regarding transport company.
5. Is especially well orientated in financial figures and manages calculating them, is able to perform profitability calculations as well as forecast bankruptcy.
6. Is proficient in socio-economic analysis on transport investment project and can determine the general effects of the project to the transport system
7. Is knowledgeable about EU transport policy goals and can relate them to principles of transport economics
8. Understands how different transport markets and environments work in relation to economic principles and market imperfections.
9. Understands various arguments for and against government intervention in transport market.

Form description

Course duration 8 weeks (stationary study); 3 academic sessions (distance learning). Lecturing in the classroom; web-based e-learning, seminars (discussions, group work and individual tasks, practical exercises), written home assignment.

Evaluation methods

Evaluation method - exam. The final grade shares the results of the following:
1. Independent homework in pairs (2 students) - writing an essay on the basis of foreign professional-based text; the maximum share of 30% of the final grade - a prerequisite criterion for the final exam.
2. A written opened-questions exam at the end of course; the maximum share of 70% of the final grade.

* Self-tests and worksheets presented on the e-course have to be done / carried out in a timely manner in accordance with the passing score set by the teacher.
* Students may improve their final grade by one grade in form of an oral interview with the lecturer within one week by the end of the course.

Note: The lowest positive results in current speciality subject is a grade of "poor" (1).
