General description

Explanation of the concept of hydrogeology, the origin and types of ground water, its physical and chemical properties and their change in time and space. The main ground water layers of Estonia, the chemical zonality of ground water. Laws of ground water movement. The Water Act and ground water protection. Reading hydrogeological maps.
Hydrostatic pressure. Hydrostatic equation. Pressure force on a plane surface and a curved surface. Flow and its properties: free flow, pressure flow, and cross-section of a flow, wetted perimeter, and hydraulic radius. Stationary and non-stationary flow. Bernoulli's equation. Classification of bleeder resistors and head loss. The laws of laminar and turbulent flow. Even and moderately uneven flow in the open channel. Calculation of channels and trenches. Tranquil, rapid and critical flow. Critical depth.

General aim

The object of the course is to introduce the laws and methods of calculation of hydraulics, the concept of hydrogeology and the hydrogeological conditions of Estonia.

Aim

Student:
- Knows the basics of hydraulics and is able to put it into practice when calculating channels and trenches.
- Knows the concept of hydrogeology, the genesis of surface and ground water and the processes taking place in them, and the hydrogeological conditions of Estonia.
