Subject 'Strength of Materials'Name in Estonian: Tugevusõpetus
General descriptionThe basis of the strength of materials. Characteristics of cross-sections. Basics of stress theory. Normal stresses. Shear stresses. Deformations and displacements. Stability.
General aimThe general aim of the course is to give base knowledge on the design of structures that have to ensure, that the structure dos not collapse or deform excessively.
AimThe student:
• understands the basis of the strength of materials; • knows the strength characteristics of materials; • knows how the characteristics of cross-sections are calculated and is able to calculate them for simple cross-sections; • knows how to calculate stresses and how they divide in the cross-section; • knows how to calculate displacementsfor simple bars resulting from normal- and bendingdeformations. • understands the basis of structural stability calculations. Form descriptionStudies consist of lectures and independent work.
LiteratureCompulsory literature:
• the lecturers notes (in the Moodle environment). Additional literature: • Teoreetiline mehaanika (Rohusaar, J. 2011). • Tugevusõpetus ehitajatele (Rohusaar, J. 2008). • Tugevusõpetuse näidisülesanded (Rohusaar, J. 2008). • Ehituskonstruktori käsiraamat (Masso, T. 2010 või 2002 või 1980). • Tugevusõpetus (Jürgenson, A. 1985). Evaluation methodsThe course ends with a written exam, which has to be passed with at least the grade satisfactory (2). There are no compulsory homeworks or tests. It is possible to gather bonus-points during the course that will be taken into account at the exam (the system for gathering those will be introduced during the first lectures of the semester).
