General description

Introduction into hydraulics. History of the development of water hoisting devices. Values that characterise liquid: specific weight, heat expansion, viscosity. Forces that act in liquid. Hydrostatic pressure. Equilibrium of liquid. Isobar plane. Basic equation of hydrostatics. Absolute pressure, gauge pressure and vacuum and measuring them. Energetic and geometric interpretation of the basic equation of hydrostatics. Pascal’s Law. Connected Vessels Law. Relative equilibrium of liquid. Pressure curve. Pressure force, having an impact on curved surface. Archimedes’ Law. Floating of bodies. Basic notions of hydrodynamics. Flow and values that characterise it. Euler’s equations. Bernoull’s equations. Flow resistances and head losses. Regimes of liquid flow. Regularities of laminar flow. Regularities of turbulent flow. Reynolds number. Equivalent harnesses of pipes. Local obstruction factors. Classification of pressure pipelines. Compound pipelines. Pipelines with variable discharge. Arterial distribution system. Ring distribution system. Pipeline with several pressure tanks. Hydraulic shock.

General aim

The objective of the course is to introduce the physical laws connected with liquids and their possible applications in technology. The course covers the theoretical basics and applications of hydrostatics and hydrodynamics.

Aim

Having passed the course the student:
- knows the physical laws connected with liquids and their possible applications in technology
and
- can apply theoretical basics of hydrostatics and hydrodynamics in calculating pipelines.
