General description

Building materials: general properties of building materials, timber materials, metal materials, natural stone materials, building ceramics, mineral binders, unburnt artificial stone products, concrete and reinforced concrete, mortars, thermal insulation, acoustic and finishing materials.
Building constructions: building loads and different types of constructive schemes, subsoils and foundations.
Main building parts: walls, ceilings, stairs, balconies, roofs, windows, doors, floors.
Building technology: masonry works, soil works, concrete works, fitters works, management of the construction site.

General aim

To give the students a basic knowledge of general characteristics of the most common building materials, building structures, building construction and working principles and the requirements for buildings.

Aim

At the end of the course the student:
1. is be able to describe the basic properties of materials, the manufacturing principles and is able to choose materials according to their technical and economical indicators;
2. knows various structural schemes of buildings and has basic knowledge of civil engineering and building design and a buildings' technical indicators;
3. knows different structural elements and is able to describe the principles of construction and their sequence;
4. has basic knowledge of construction transportation, most commonly used construction machinery, the technology of most important building processes (soil masonry, concrete and assembly works) and construction site management.

Form description

The course is 85% web-based, study consists of lectures and independent tasks.
