General descriptionOverview of the legislation on which the traffic management is based on in Estonia and Europe.
Convention on Road Signs and Signals, Traffic act, Roads act and other legal acts which are based on these aforementioned acts. Overview on the general principles of traffic management and good practices in urban and rural areas. Installation requirements of traffic signs, road surface markings and traffic signals. The requirements and good practices of roundabouts. The requirements and good practices of pedestrian crossings and pedestrian crossing points. The principals of traffic calming. The requirements and good practices of urban streets. The requirements and good practices of highways. The applied traffic management principles during road and street closures. Overview of principles on the traffic safety auditing and traffic safety inspection. Prerequisite courses: Traffic Instruction General aimThe objective of this course is to provide knowledge of the requirements and good practices in traffic management on how to achieve calm and safe traffic.
AimThe student, who has passed this course, has the general knowledge of the principles of calm and safe traffic management.
The student knows the principals on the installation of traffic signs, road surface markings and traffic signals. The student knows the principals on the planning, standardizing and designing road networks. The student has overview of the principals of traffic calming. The student knows the principles of the traffic management during road and street closures. The student has overview of the principals of traffic safety auditing and traffic safety inspection. Form descriptionLectures on the traffic management legislation, acts and good practices will be given in the first half of the course. In the second half of the course students will receive practical assignments based on the learned knowledge. The students will write a paper on describing one or more traffic problems and point out cost-efficient solutions. During the presentation of the papers there will be public discussion, where all the participating students can express opinions on the subject. Teacher: lecturer Sulev Sannik

Evaluation methodsIn order to be admitted to the final assessment, the student must hand in all the practical assignments given during the course and secondly give a presentation on the paper of a traffic problem.
The final grade is calculated from total points gained from practical assignments 40%, given presentation 40% and final assessment 20%.
