Subject 'Engineering Materials'Name in Estonian: Tehnomaterjalid
General descriptionFerrous metal: steel and cast iron, their usage. Mechanical properties and testing of materials for static, dynamic and fatigue strength. Materials with specific technological properties, e.g. good weldability, malleability and machinability. Conductors, magnetic materials. Incorrodible and heat-resistant materials. Structure and properties of polymers. Plastics, elastomers and their reprocessing. Ceramic materials, glass and carbonaceous materials: diamond, graphite, fullerenes. Principles of nano-materials and nano-technology. Composite materials: content and properties.
General aimThe aim of the course is to provide knowledge about main engineering materials in modern technology: metallic materials, non-metallic materials. Steels, cast irons, copper- and aluminum alloys, materials with special technologies and physical properties. Organic and inorganic polymers. Engineering plastics, elastomers, ceramic, glass, graphite, composite materials.
AimThe student who has mastered this course can select the suitable material from the group of engineering materials according to working conditions. Is aware of the criteria according to which the suitability of material is estimated for working on big mechanical load, high or low temperature, in aggressive environment, intensive corrosion. Knows the main features according to which the structural materials are selected according to making technology, required mechanical and physical properties. Evaluates the material and its processing costs in case that the technical requirements enable to use different engineering materials.
Is able to select the material and its method of heat-treatment according to exercise. Form descriptionLectures, homework "Choice of Material", test.
