Subject 'Soil Mechanics and Foundations + Course Project'Name in Estonian: Pinnasemehaanika ja vundamendid + projekt
General descriptionProperties of soils. Stress distribution from the soil dead weight and the weight, imposed by a building. Corner point method. Bearing capacity of soil and the factors that have an impact on it. Dimensioning of a strip foundation and pier foundation. Cooperation of a building and footing. Calculation of settlements. Permitted limit deformations. Piled foundations. Advantages and disadvantages of the types of piles. Bearing capacity of a pile. Slope persistence. Active and passive pressure, affecting the retaining wall. Possible layouts of a retaining wall and their control. Soil improvement, compaction. Use of geosynthetics.
General aimThe objective of the course is to give an overview about soil properties and foundation types being used, as well as the design basics of foundations with low sinking. The course also deals with the shaping of piled foundations and their calculation as well as slope persistence.
AimThe course provides within the framework of higher applied education curriculum the students a theoretical preparation in the field of soils and foundations for working as production managers at performing general construction works at the level of a company manager, project leader or supervisor, as well as designers of construction structures.
Form descriptionClassroom work: lectures and practical classes.
Independent work: in accordance with the initial data, given by the lecturer, the student performs the calculation of a low foundation and drafts the technical drawings that explain the solution.
