Subject 'Basics of Ecology'Name in Estonian: Ökoloogia alused
General descriptionResearch object of ecology. Ecological factors, autotrophs, heterotrophs, relations between organisms. Food chain. Species, population and characteristics that characterise them. Ecosystem, notions that characterise it. Adaptation, formation of a species, importance of species in an ecosystem. Natural selection. Ecological global problems: nutrition problems, water and soil problems. Natural resources and their usage. Forests, importance of forests as an energy binder. Relations of applied biology and biotechnology. Ethics.
General aimThe objective of the course is to provide knowledge about ecology, fundamental notions of the field and ecological global problems, interconnect the knowledge acquired with the field of study, be enriched with the knowledge of interrelations between nature’s biotic and abiotic parts and develop value judgements, based on a high valuation of nature protection.
AimThe student:
- knows the fundamental notions of ecology, defined with the curriculum; - understands and can evaluate ecological global problems; - interrelates theoretical opinions with the speciality and -can give ethical assessments to phenomena.
