Subject 'Modern Architecture'Name in Estonian: Kaasaegne arhitektuur
General descriptionThe introduction of the course shows the early rationalistic manifestation as a reaction to the industrial revolution. The similarities and differences of Estonian, the USAŽs and European styles are observed at the same time, logically continued by art nouveau, and its rise and fall. A new phenomenon - Modernism and abundance of its styles. World wars and totalitarian regime with its architectural stagnation. Soviet power with the following changes in architecture. The final stage of idealization of Modernism, the wave of Post-modernism in the world, and avant-garde young architects in Estonia. Identity search of the 1990s. The course ends with the image anatomy of the 21th century.
General aimThe aim of the course is to evaluate the processes and background of modern architecture starting from the mid 19th century to the present day. To familiarize students with theories of architecture, ideologies and examples of creation of individual architects, and urban aspects in architecture in chronological order, both in the world and in Estonia.
AimThe student has acquainted with the architectural creation of the period and this knowledge is a requisite basis for the future professional work.
Form descriptionLectures, illustrated by photo material and videos.
