The overview of Earth structure, the development of earth crust, lito-and hydrosphere. The basics of geological structure of Estonia e.g. base rocks, soil cover. The basics of Estonian geotectonics and geodynamic processes.
Introduction to soil science, soil classification, physical and mechanical properties of soils.
The matter and concept of geotechnics. Tension distribution in the soil. Taking geotechnical conditions into consideration while planning and designing. Soil investigations, laboratory tests and field tests. Foundations, types of foundations in different geotechnical conditions. Soil improvement, usage of geosynthetics and geomaterials in construction. Geotechnical monitoring. Engineering-geological mapping.

General aim

The aim of the course is to provide basic knowledge of geology, hydrogeology, geodynamic processes, geotechnics, soil mechanics, and to show the relationships between them and human activity, design, construction and exploitation of buildings.

Aim

Students will acquire the basics of geology, hydrogeology, geodynamic processes, geotechnics and soil mechanics. They will understand special terminology, be able to find special literature and information, be in on legislative acts, norms and standards.
