Aim

The objective of the applied higher education curricula in road construction is to prepare engineers (EstQF level 6, Civil Engineer in Road Engineering), who are accepted by the labour market and who fulfil tasks that need analytical thinking and decisiveness in changing circumstances, have field-specific knowledge and skills, organize the division of resources and the work of employees and takes responsibility for it.
Professional knowledge and skills obtaining is organized via theoretical studies, practical trainings and practise at working environment. Furthermore curriculum aim is to approve student’s general education knowledge and social aspects; assure knowledge of languages in special field and self-improvement; the fundamentals of mathematics and natural science, the basis of road designing maintenance technologies and graphics.
Road Construction graduate student can work as road management specialists and continue studies with master’s study.

Learning outcomes

The student who fully completes the curriculum has the following competences:
- has broad knowledge of the field of road construction;
- is able to use the obtained knowledge and skills at work;
- is able to estimate the profession's role and outcomes in the society from an ethical point of view;
- is able to participate actively and responsibly in the civil society, can work in a multidisciplinary project team;
- bases one’s actions on the occupational ethics and behavioural codex of an engineer;
- has a grasp of the communication and leadership skills necessary for the profession, uses accurate professional terminology;
- can use the necessary information and communication technologies relevant to the specialty;
- knows the legislation, standards and legal acts regulating road management, and can use these in professional work;
- is able to gain professional additional training for self-developing;
- is able to consider social, economic, environmentally friendly and ethical aspects when putting designed projects into effect;
- knows and is able to use road construction technologies and materials, can apply the principles of quality management and activity plans;
- is able to plan road designs and lead the construction process;
- knows the operating principles of construction machinery, their fields of application and is able to estimate their productivity;
- knows road maintenance requirements;
- can estimate the cost of road construction works;
- knows the bases of entrepreneurship;
- follows and assures the following of health and safety regulations;
- has the analytical skills characteristic of an engineer.
