Curriculum: Social Work 2020/2021



Module Description
General Study Objectives:
To create prerequisites for specialty studies and support student’s development in the learning environment teaching them to utilise the techniques of self-direction.
To support the development of professional communication and cooperation skills, and utilisation of ICT.

Learning outcomes:
The student
• manages in the learning environment, understands the structure of the curriculum and study arrangements, and is able to find and use necessary information to pass the studies utilising self-directed techniques;
• utilises job related legislative acts and work environment requirements,
• has high level knowledge of the official language both orally and in written form, and is able to utilise the knowledge and skills in oral and written communication;
• utilises necessary professional digital competences at a required level;
• is able to express themselves clearly, compose written summaries, present them orally, answer the questions and give arguments in one foreign language;
• follows the basic rules of documenting the written papers and follows academic regulations in writing student assignments.
Basic Subjects. Social and economic environment Objectives:
To create critical understanding of human, organisational and social functioning to understand their relationships.

Learning outcomes:
The student
• has knowledge of social work legislation and utilises it in professional situations;
• understands the necessity of lifelong learning and career opportunities;
• speaks Russian and participates in professional discussions;
• has an overview of public health behaviour, understands the importance and possible implementation of health promotion in their professional work;
• understands social, economic and environmental processes and considers them in analysing and solving professional problems, and in project work;
• understands the behaviour of people in an organisation, detects the problematic situations in their work, analyses them and suggests possible, including innovative solutions.
Basic Subjects. Psychology Objectives:
To provide students with knowledge of basic principles of human psyche and behaviour and skills to utilise professional approaches in the work with people.

Learning outcomes:
The student:
• analyses the principles of human development and components affecting the development, and understands effects of social interaction;
• defines personal and family problems and uses communication and counselling techniques in their professional work;
• understands the importance and opportunities of social worker’s personal sustainability and is able to use self-care techniques.
Specialty Subjects. Social work theory and methods Objectives:
To create understanding of social work as a profession, its development and mission in society, and provide students with knowledge of social work theories, methods and social welfare system.

Learning outcomes:
The student:
• understands the basics and development of social work as a profession, and the role of social work in society;
• analyses the functioning of social welfare system, evaluates how appropriate the services and grants are to support a person and household;
• knows social work theories and is able to prevent and alleviate social problems using contemporary methods;
• knows different social theories, follows the principles of social work ethics, justifies their moral convictions, and is tolerate towards the diversity of attitudes and values;
• knows the principles of case study and networking, and proactive methods in work with different groups;
• analyses critically current situation and perspectives of Estonian social policy;
• understands community work and empowers communities involving volunteers.
Specialty Subjects. Work with clients Objectives:
To provide students with contemporary knowledge and skills in working with different groups of people (children, and families, the elderly, people with special needs, etc.) and their close network.

Learning outcomes:
The student:
• has a systematic overview of social work in different groups, analyses their needs, opportunities for involvement, empowerment and help, and cooperates with network members to find solutions;
• understands the peculiarities of the needs of different groups, organises and provides services together with the client considering the context;
• uses appropriate social work methods to support coping mechanisms and capacities at personal, family and community level;
• has an overview of innovative technologies in social work and social care in Estonia and elsewhere;
• reflects on their activities and their results in social field.
Specialty Subjects. Research Paper Objectives:
To provide students with opportunities to utilise the knowledge and skills acquired in preparing the research paper.

Learning outcomes:
The student:
• follows the principles of documentation of written assignments and research papers;
• choses the research topic, defines the research problem, research objective and tasks or questions, and develops logical structure for the research paper;
• compares main research strategies, and data collection and analysis methods;
• describes the choice of sample and uses it in planning the research;
• presents appropriate theoretical basis and methods for dealing with the research topic and carrying out the empirical research.
Graduation Thesis Objective:
To enable students utilise their knowledge and skills in preparing their graduation thesis/passing the final exam, carrying out the analysis and presenting the results.

Learning outcomes:
The student
• develops, supplements, systemises and deepens professional theoretical knowledge and skills in the research field;
• is able to independently collect information in a foreign language and interpret it critically and creatively using appropriate methods and tools;
• carries out an empirical research using appropriate research methods, and analytical and generalisation skills;
• interprets research results and presents them academically.
