Curriculum: Road Construction 2013/2014



Module Description
Humanities 15 ECTS credits, 12 ECTS credits compulsory courses, 3 ECTS credits optional courses.

Objective:
to introduce opinions and attitudes of science and politics in the field of the specialty and enable to acquire a special foreign language.

Learning outcomes:
student
- possesses the communication and teamwork skills and communication technologies;
- is able to understand the information about speialty in foreign language;
- can use the oral and written language in solving specialty-related problems and situations;
- is able to take part in professional conversations.
Mathematics, Sciences and Graphics 40 ECTS credits, 38 ECTS credits compulsory courses, 2 ECTS credits optional courses.

Objective:
to acquire the general knowledge of the fundamentals of mathematics, sciences and engineering graphics.

Learning outcomes:
student
- has acquired general knowledge in sciences and the physics of solid body;
- is able to use different calculation methods and information technology models based on these solve tasks.
Road Construction and Planning 32 ECTS credits, 28 ECTS credits compulsory courses, 4 ECTS credits optional courses.

Objective:
to acquire knowledge of road design, construction works and the planning of these.

Learning outcomes:
student
- knows the fundamentals of road construction and road maintenance, properties of construction materials and their applications, the environmental impacts on road structures;
- is familiar with the basics of design, levels of design and the requirements for design documentation;
- is able to use, analyze and generalize the necessary data for road planning and design and, based on that, design a road or a structural part of it;
- can plan, manage and organize road construction works implementing means of information technology.
Construction Mechanics and Road Facilities 30 ECTS credits, 30 ECTS credits compulsory courses.

Objective:
to acquire knowledge about the design of road facilities´components and structural parts of the road, the planning and construction works of the facilities.

Learning outcomes:
student
- is familiar with the physical and mechanical laws of a solid body, which are necessary for determining stress deformation, and is able to utilize these laws;
- is able to plan the design of road facilities, determine the limiting state of the constructions of the facilities and substructures;
- can construct the foundations of road facilities;
- is able to use the design standards, requirements and specifications of road facilities using special software;
- has an overview of the basics and methods of research and development of road constructions and materials.
Road Construction 34 ECTS credits, 32 ECTS credits compulsory courses, 2 ECTS credits optional courses.

Objective:
to acquire the knowledge of technologies of road construction works and maintenance, and the implementations of road construction techniques.

Learning outcomes:
student
-m knows the technologies of road construction, implementations of road construction techniques and is able to evaluate the environmental effect of these;
- can estimate the necessary labour force and technical and material resources for the construction works, and applyb the principles of quality management;
- is able to analyze and process information and make rational decisions in the field of study. Has a creative and innovative approach to solving problems using means of information technology.
Economics and Business Administration 20 ECTS credits, 16 ECTS credits compulsory courses, 4 ECTS credits optional courses.

Objective:
to learn about the basics and regulations of the functions of economics on both general and road construction enterprising levels.

Learning outcomes:
student
- has a hold of the terminology and main concepts of economics and is able to use them;
- can compile price estimates for road maintenance works, lead a road construction project or the necessary resources for the completion of planning a part of it;
- knows the principles of enterprising, fundamentals of accountancy and is able to analyze the financial situation of a company;
- is familiar with the procedures of road construction biddings and laws in road construction.
Working Life 15 ECTS credits, 9 ECTS credits compulsory courses, 6 ECTS credits optional courses.

Objective:
to acquire knowledge about the impact of road maintenance on the physical environment, and impact of road construction environment on occupational health and work safety on organizational level.

Learning outcomes:
student
- has acquired the knowledge of environmentally friendly road construction and maintenance works in conjunction with the impact on the physical environment;
- has acquired the principles of work safety on a general and specific enterprising level, has developed an attitude to implementing means of occupational health;
- is able to utilize means of information technology in special and social activities and communication.
Practical Training 42 ECTS credits.

Objective:
gaining practical skills, developing communicational and social competences and entrepreneurship based on theoretical knowledge.

Learning outcomes:
student
- has gained knowledge of the structure of an enterprise and its financial economic organization;
- is familiar with the work at a company, can evaluate the employees´operations;
- can participate and act in a work team taking into account changing work situations;
- is able to devide the recources necessary for road works and supervise co-workers;
-is capable of solving any work related problems innovatively and creatively.
Graduation Thesis 12 ECTS credits.

Objective:
to utilize the gained specific knowledge and apply it in solving theoretical and practical problems in road construction.

Learning outcomes:
student
- can estimate one´s own professional skills and expertise diversely and systematically, and define the personal need for development;
- makes innovative and environmentally respectful decisions and finds optimal solutions to problems;
- is able to plan, organize and develop one´s actions driven from common practice. Takes responsibility for one´s own actions.
