General description
General characteristics of composite materials. Methods of manufacturing composites: moulding, forming and wrapping. Classification according to field of application: general-duty structural, heat-resistant, antifriction, impact resistant and fireproof composites, their composition, properties and applications. Classification according to fibre-embedding matrix: metallic, polymeric, ceramic and carbon-base composites, their manufacturing technology, properties and applications. Powder coatings, their nature and behaviour. Coating equipment. Gas thermal coating, powder flame spray, powder metallurgical and vapour-deposited coatings. Metallic coatings. Galvanized zinc coatings, electroplated nickel, cadmium, chromium and copper coatings. Oxide and phosphate coatings. Properties and application of electroplated coatings. Enamel, paint and lacquer coatings. Features and use of organic coatings.
Review of most commonly used plastics, their designation, properties, forming, machining and testing methods. Selection of plastics capable of substituting metals as the material of sleeve bearings, gears, etc.
General aim
Review of the composites used as modern structural materials and their manufacturing methods. Review of polymer materials, their structure, properties and their main usage. The assets and processing methods of plastics used in technology.
Aim
The student who has mastered this course can define composites, plastics and coatings from other structural materials and can use his knowledge at choosing the material. The student knows the manufacturing technologies and chemical and physical properties of composite materials, coatings and plastics.
Form description
Lectures, teamwork, individual work.
Evaluation methods
The course is evaluated based on the written and oral reports.

Grading system:
0-50% grade 0 "fail"
51-60% grade 1 "sufficient"
61-70% grade 2 "satisfactory"
71-80% grade 3 "good"
81-90% grade 4 "very good"
