General description
Composition of matter and classification. Insulating materials: polarization, electrical conduction, dielectric losses, and overview of breakdown in gases, fluids and solids. Thermal and mechanical properties of insulating materials. Gaseous, liquid and solid materials and their use. Semiconductors: chemical elements and compounds. Supplements in semiconductors and their influence to conducting behavior. Conductors: conductivity. Conductor materials and their use. Magnetic materials: magnetization process and losses. Soft and hard magnetic materials. Permanent magnets and their use.
General aim
• Gives scholarship about main processes in electrical materials (insulating materials, semiconductors, conductors and magnetic materials) in electric and magnetic fields and about use of materials in high-current equipment;
• Gives knowledge for measuring and testing of different materials in electric and magnetic fields.
Aim
• Student describes electrical and magnetic properties of substance from the point of view of atomic structure and bonding;
• Student describes classification of materials on the basis of electrical and magnetic properties;
Student describes types of polarization in dielectrics;
• Student describes conduction in insulating materials and influence of different factors to materials conductivity;
• Student calculates on the basis of laboratory measurements dielectric constant and conductivity;
• Student describes dielectric losses and principles of loss calculation;
• Student describes breakdown and dielectric strength of dielectrics;
• Student describes electric conduction mechanism in semiconductors and influence of donors to conduction type;
• Student describes electric conduction mechanism in conductors and influence of impurities and thermal or mechanical treatment to conductivity;
• Student describes properties of high conductivity metals and high resistivity alloys;
• Student describes properties of magnetic materials in magnetic field.
Form description
Lectures, individual work, tests, laboratory works.
Evaluation methods
The course ends with an examination. Positively executed tests, individual work and laboratory works are the prerequisites of the exam. The examinee must answer written questions within the framework of lecture material. The final grade will turn out from the average grades of tests, individual work and exam.
