| General description |
Concept and branches of cartography, short history of cartography, concept of a map, map classification and properties, mathematical basis of a map, cartographic projections, map letters, cartographic generalisation, map quality, the production process of a map, more important national maps, copyright in cartography.
The notion of a digital map. Map digitization. Basics of telemetry. Aero photo. Digital photo technology. Digital cartography equipment and its handling.
GIS components, types and principles of creation. GIS applications. The use of different data sources, data transformation. GIS software and databases. |

| General aim |
The general objective of the course is to provide knowledge about maps, compilation of maps, map projections and projection distortions.
The objective of Digital Cartography is to give an overview of digital maps.
The aim of the course is also to provide knowledge about the Geographic Information system (GIS), different types of GIS data, methods of collecting and storing of GIS data, analysing and presentation of GIS data. |

| Aim |
Having successfully passed the course the student:
1. Knows the basics of the history of cartography;
2. Knows different cartographic projections and different map distortions due to projections;
3. Knows different geographic information systems and the usages of spatial data;
4. Knows how digital maps are made and how they can be used.
The student can make the difference between screen and vector maps, knows the technology of satellite pictures, s/he masters the use of digital maps. |
