General description
The program of this course contains the main subjects of the gymnasium mathematics program: real numbers and expressions, powers, roots and logarithms; linear, quadratic, fractional, logarithmical and exponential equations and inequalities; equations and inequalities of higher degree; systems of equations and inequalities; trigonometry; plane geometry; word problems involving percents.
General aim
This course gives the sound knowledge of mathematics and how to use mathematics as a tool in engineering. The students completed this course are well prepared for deeper studies in the subsequent mathematical courses (Mathematics II and III). In this course, students develop logical and mathematical thinking ability as well.
Aim
By the end of this course, the student should
- know the basic properties of the real numbers and be able to apply the basic techniques of calculating powers and roots to real numbers;
- be familiar with elementary properties of logarithms;
- be able to simplify and factoring algebraic expressions using well known recognizable patterns such as the difference of two squares, cubes and s.o.;
- be able to solve linear, quadratic, fractional, logarithmical and exponential equations and inequalities;
- be able to solve systems of linear equations (up to three variables), and to apply them to "real world" problems;
- be able to solve algebraic inequalities and systems of inequalities, and to present their solutions graphically;
- be able to solve "real world" problems using percents;
- be able to manipulate with trigonometric identities, and to solve planimetric problems using trigonometry;
- be able to draw a graph of a line from a simple equation.
Form description
Lectures, practical lessons, group study, e-learning.
Evaluation methods
During the course a student has to pass three tests. The final grade of the course is computed by weighted mean of credits of tests. The tasks of the tests are composed on the basis of the standard problems solved at the practical lessons and according to the topics from the course program. The number of tests during the course can be changed by the responsible lecturer.
